Hamilton Hood Foundation Announces Annual Juneteenth Commemorative Program Honoring the Legacy of Pierce Chapel African Cemetery

Midland, GA – June 5, 2024 – The Hamilton Hood Foundation is proud to announce its Annual Juneteenth Commemorative Program to be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the Pierce Chapel Methodist Church. This year’s program, centered on the theme Jubilee: Yesterday, Today, and Forevermore, promises to be a poignant and inspiring event that honors the enduring spirit of freedom and resilience.

Yamona Pierce, President of the Hamilton Hood Foundation, says “we’ve drawn inspiration from several sources to create a meaningful celebration that resonates deeply with the essence of Juneteenth.”

Key Inspirations for the Theme:

  • 159th Anniversary of Juneteenth: 2024 marks the 159th anniversary of Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
  • Jubilee Day: Juneteenth is also known as Jubilee Day, symbolizing a time of joy and celebration.
  • Religious Significance: Jubilee is defined as a religious song of African Americans, often referring to a future time of happiness and liberation.
  • Hebrews 13:8: This biblical verse states, “God is the same yesterday, today, and forever,” offering a foundation of dependable faith as we celebrate Juneteenth and reflect on today’s tumultuous world events.

The program will feature a series of events aimed at honoring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring hope for the future. Highlights feature historical reenactments by the 9th & 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, performances directed by Keith Patrick McCoy of the Columbus Springer Opera House, West African drum sessions, a community chorale, genealogy insights, poetry readings, musical performances, and community reflections.

The historic Pierce Chapel African Cemetery, established circa 1827, serves as a significant backdrop for the event. As the final resting place for enslaved Africans and their descendants, it stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of minority communities in Harris County, Georgia.

“We invite everyone to join us in this celebration of freedom, heritage, and hope,” says Pierce. “Together, we will honor the legacies our ancestors, recognize the advancements we’ve accomplished, and reaffirm our commitment to a future where freedom and equity are realities for all.”
